Residency License

North Carolina has an alternate pathway to becoming a professional educator called the Residency License. This route allows qualified individuals to obtain a teaching position and begin teaching right away as a Resident while obtaining a clear professional educator's license. The first step required for a residency license is to obtain employment with a NC school district. The school system must begin the process to obtain the residency license. Then, North Carolina A&T State University's MAT Program, an approved NC DPI Educator Preparation Program for   Residency License in 12 MAT concentrations, will complete the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) verification for final processing. The Residency License requires the following:

  • Employment in NC public schools and enrollment in NC A&T's MAT Educator Preparation Program
  • Completed Residency License application submitted via the NCDPI Online Licensure system by an NC employing school system
